If a scheduled payment fails, Automattic for Agencies automatically retries the charge over the following days and sends you email reminders. If the payment is not resolved within 9 days, your subscriptions are revoked and any associated websites are taken down.
In this guide, you will learn what happens when a payment fails, how to resolve it, and what to do if your subscriptions have already been revoked.
- Payment fails: The system automatically retries the charge over the following days.
- Email reminders: You receive notifications prompting you to update your payment method.
- 9-day deadline: If the payment is not resolved within 9 days of the initial failure, all unpaid subscriptions are revoked.
⚠️
Revocation includes taking down websites hosted through your subscriptions. Resolve the failed payment as soon as possible to avoid service interruption.
If there is an issue with your current payment method, you can update the payment method on file.
- Navigate to your client dashboard.
- Click “Payment methods” in the sidebar to open your WordPress.com account.
- Update your card details or add a new payment method.
The system will automatically retry the charge using your updated card. For more details on managing your cards, see update your payment method
Once you have updated the payment method or resolved the issue with your existing payment method, you can manually renew the purchase.
- Navigate to your subscriptions page on your WordPress.com account by clicking “Payment methods” in the sidebar of your Automattic for Agencies dashboard
- Click “Active Upgrades”

- Select the subscription with the failed payment.
- Click the “Renew now” button.
This processes the payment immediately using your current payment method.
💡
Setting a backup payment method helps prevent missed payments in the future. If your primary card is declined, the backup is charged automatically. See update your payment method for instructions.
If your subscriptions have already been revoked, contact your agency. They can work with you and Automattic for Agencies support to explore options for restoring your product(s) and website(s).
