Service guidelines

In this Guide

We love hosting and supercharging your WordPress sites, enabling you to design, secure, and grow it entirely on your own. However, we are also passionate about making the web a better place, so under our Terms of Service, there are certain types of content and conduct we refuse to enable:

  • Anything illegal.
  • Child exploitation.
  • Clear and specific death threats or incitements to violence.
  • Overtly malicious and deceptive practices, such as phishing, spreading technologically harmful content (like malicious scripts/viruses), or using your site to attack other sites.
  • Sexually explicit material. We know that there may be different definitions of this, but generally, we define sexually explicit material as visual depictions of sexually explicit acts. Nudity, in and of itself, is fine. Read more about our mature content guidelines.

If your site (or your client’s site) contains or is engaged in any of the above, we may immediately and completely disconnect your site from the Automattic for Agencies program, without notice.

There are a few other circumstances in which additional policies may apply, or we may restrict or disconnect your Automattic for Agencies connection. Read on for more details.

While you can use the code of our WooCommerce plugin to sell highly-regulated products, you cannot use direct services offered by Automattic to support those stores. Automattic’s direct services include, but are not limited to WordPress.com and the Jetpack plugin.

This means that you can use the open-source WooCommerce plugin to sell highly-regulated products, but you cannot:

You may not use WooCommerce if you sell certain controlled and highly-regulated substances, such as:

  • marijuana/cannabis
  • explosives (including fireworks)
  • firearms and accessories (including ammunition)
  • non-ammunitions weapons (for example knives, swords, throwing stars, air guns)

Please see WooCommerce guidelines for CBD and other hemp-derived products and Pressable’s guidance for CBD and hemp products.

You or your customers may reside in countries where some of these products are fully legalized, but their production and sale in the US—where Automattic is registered—is highly regulated.

Any videos uploaded to VideoPress on your Automattic for Agencies-connected site must comply with WordPress.com’s user guidelines.

Jetpack’s site accelerator, also known as Jetpack’s Image CDN, is only allowed to be used by sites hosted on WordPress.com, or on Jetpack-connected WordPress sites. Abuse of the CDN service or violation of the WordPress.com Terms of Service could result in suspension of your site from Automattic for Agencies-connected services.

Bear in mind that these are just guidelines — interpretations are solely up to us. These guidelines are not exhaustive and are subject to change.
